Session 64: We Find the Main Bad Priests

The party fights and epic battle at the mouth of the cult's main cave.

This write up is based on our Saturday, April 4, 2026 session. Written by our scribe Carl, with edits and additions by myself. Since we are scattered around the country, we use Discord for voice communications and the Roll20 online tabletop to connect with each other.

Date: May 21, 4433
Location: The Tunnels under the Temple of Frigga

We waded into a large cavern. It was more than 200 feet long and 100 feet wide, with a ceiling nearly 50 feet above our heads. A narrow but fast-moving stream cut through the middle of the cavern. Five sections of the stream had been channeled to allow water to veer off to though openings along the rim of the cavern. The force of the underground river coupled with the sloppily carved diversion channels sends excess water over the edges and into the chamber. The entire floor of the cavern was under a layer of warm water knee deep.

Hundreds of short stalactites and stalagmites covered the floor and roof of the large chamber, obstructing various parts of the area from view. Thousands of inverted skeletons hung from rusty chains, intermixed with the rock formations of the roof. Suspended by bony ankles or cracked pelvic bones, the skeletal remains of humanoids of all different shapes and sizes lightly swung on their bulky chains overhead. Many are missing arms or heads, but those who still have their upper appendages have them wired to point their hands and fingers in various directions, suggesting they are hinting at different locations in the chamber. Skeletal remains with intact skulls have an eerie light shining from their eye sockets, providing dim green light in the cavern.

We had finally found the main bad priests (hopefully the remaining lot of them) and were ready to dish out all we could.

The acolytes of Frigga cast bless on all of us for an extra boost.

We lead off with hitting one bullywug. It burst into flames to get us off and going.

And the fight was on... the bullywugs were, naturally, wimps;  however the priests (not even the biggest dogs who may be in the fight) were NOT. We knew going in that this would take a lot of doing, and the first round of combat confirmed that in electrum.

Not just priests and bullywugs, but demons too.  That became more and more apparent as a couple of them flew directly at us.  Good thing we had (at least then) a decent grouping.

With the humidity, it was a bad day for bow strings.

Demons, lots and lots of demons... all wanting to get up close and personal with us. Guess we bring out the most social in folks.

But social or not, spitting was just plain rude... especially if its acid.

Demons to the left of us, demons to the right, demons in front of us, and OMG OMG OMG a demon teleported into the middle of us.

To exacerbate things more, another one was flying, and out of melee range. So had to take it on with spells and ranged weapons.  Meanwhile the crap just kept on hitting the fan.

Next fan impact was a BIG demon, so big it was not even slowed by the water as it strode to us.  YIKES!

If its big, it must be for Aefir. He went charging up to meet it.

A couple demons approached us from the rear in the middle of combat, one of them carrying (probably) a message in a scrollcase. They were a real danger to the acolytes of Frigga, who had mostly stayed in the back with Beneddar.

Down they went, a little slower than we would have liked, but down nonetheless. The scrollcase landed in the water and began floating south.

The flying demon was a separate problem from the rest of the group.

We were smart to stay near the tunnel entry to the big big room and let them come to us. It hurt at times, but it was smart.

Just as we were getting ahead, three giant frogs arrived, summoned earlier by one of the priests.

We planned to take Forgnast as prisoner, cause we were truly merciful... OK, cause we needed to know stuff he knows - like where the main priest is, are there any more prisoners, do they have 'the book' we sort of agreed to get for the lich, anything else of interest.

Something big came around the corner from the left, it looked like a bullywug, but was taller and meaner looking.

Then there was a flash of light and Sarthoggus himself appeared in front of us.
