Session 48: The Mummys' Tomb

The party fights waterlogged zombies and mummies as they continued exploring the ruins of the old temple.

This write up is based on our Sunday, December 1, 2024 session and was written by our scribe Carl with a few additions from myself. Thanks to our mapper Jimmy for the screen shots.  Since we are scattered around the country, we use Discord for voice communications and the Roll20 online tabletop to connect with each other.

We were down below the ground, at a zombie fest. We fought a mummy too.

Aefir brought out the old tomb map we had found earlier. It looked a lot like where we are wandering about now.

Searching around the big slab, Reebo found a hidden compartment. He could find no traps so he opened it carefully. Inside were 20 silver bars and a sizable silk bag. Inside the bag was a fine wooden case, in very good shape considering where it was. "Wisdom flowers in the furrow of a wound." was engraved on the cover.

With the water walk spell running down, we left further investigations until later.

Pressing on, we came to what seemed like an operating room. There were some body parts in jars, but we found mostly junk until Steadfast found a large uncut diamond in a nondescript clay pot.

As we proceeded down the corridor we could hear some splashing ahead.

Many zombies were in the water here in a pool. There were more zombies blocking off what appeared to be a drain. It seemed that some force was holding them down at the bottom of the pool. If we could clear that area maybe the water would stop being a problem for us. The zombies were trying to get away from the suction, to no avail.

When Aefir approached the edge of the pit, the zombies doubled up on effort and some pulled themselves loose and they tried to come at Aefir.

Them being underwater did not deter us from trying to attack. Filthy undead. Fortunately (or Un..) some were able to climb out... briefly.  Unless they came out we really could not attack effectively, and the presumptive drain at the bottom would stay clogged. Killing them and having them fall back into the pool would leave the clog in place too.

Eventually some of them were able to climb out, and get whacked for their troubles.

Paraselene spoke and gestured with her holy symbol, and most of the zombies disintegrated.

Arkelm put a lightning bolt deep in the pool, pretty much taking down the zombies there and giving us all a bit of a shock. The drain reclogged with undead bodies.

Those that remained were dispatched shortly afterward. The downside was that those in the water were even more of a clog to the drain.  Good try but we still had water all over the place. A solid plug of zombies was preventing any more drainage.

Steadfast was concerned about the water walking spell timing out, and led most of the group back toward the entrance. Reebo stayed behind (never split the party????) with an unseen servant trying to clear the pile of zombies at the bottom of the pool. We found some rocky areas that Steadfast could stand on to renew the water walking. That area, as it happened, was probably the source of the water coming in, we could see a steady stream of water leaking in through the cave in.  Steadfast renewed the water walking spell on everyone except Reebo, who was well out of range at that point.

More felt than heard, Beneddar detected some movement behind the rocks that were blocking most of the inflow of water. It seemed like a good reason to be someplace else.

Shadow ran back to tell Reebo that we were proceeding and that more water could be coming in the reasonably near future.  Reebo said he would follow when he had cleared the clog.

We came to another T intersection, with something off to the east. Perhaps another mummy, perhaps a ghoul or a ghost. Splashing as it moved around.

Heading east, once more into the breach. It was another  mummy and it had a golden dagger and sickle, dual wielding.  It approached Aefir and glared at him.

A few well chosen spells and a crossbow shot later, the high priest was not so high. Looking around, tapestries, soaking up the water, adorned the walls.  Some of the pictures were grossly evil and horrifying to look at.

We heard a splash in the distance as we checked out the room, almost certainly Reebo falling into the water after his walking on water spell ended.

A marble slab was the mummy's former resting place. Searching around it didn't have any compartments, but we did find a chest submerged in the water. A big one, heavy, made of bronze. Lifting it up on the slab, we opening it to reveal that it was airtight.  Inside were some parchments and scrolls, plus some 1000 silver and 500 gold. Four plain candles in wax wrapping.

We went further down the passage and came to a room with a wrapped body floating face down. Looked a lot like a trapped area, with a sword on the slab and it was unusually dark in the room. Most of the room had sustained significant water damage, but the sword looked really good.

Aefir, seeing the floater not moving, started looking around the slab and the room. As we spoke a bit, the mummy started to get up. Combat one more time, yay team.

Steadfast shocked the group by pulling out a flaming scimitar and attacking the mummy.  Might be short but bravery is tall in this one. Once more, mummy down.
