Session 61: Back to the Temple

The party returns to the Temple of Frigga and learns that the cultists were busy while the party recovered.

This write up is based on our Sunday, January 4, 2026 session. Written by our scribe Carl, with edits and additions by myself. Since we are scattered around the country, we use Discord for voice communications and the Roll20 online tabletop to connect with each other.

In town, rested and ready to go back.

We walked up to the temple with some of the town militia for the rescue and final cleanup (Hopefully).

When we arrived at the temple, Mordacity Maghoula was there with Sergeant Berk Solal and more militia. There were also a group of acolytes of Frigga and some townspeople there.

The acolytes wanted to go inside and clean up, but Maghoula wouldn't let them in until the temple was cleared by us.

The animated statues in the main room had been reduced to piles of broken rock, there were large cracks in the stone floor but the building itself looked structurally sound.

The access doors to downstairs had been locked and secured. It took Reebo and a Knock spell to get one of them opened.  Clearly the downstairs area was NOT free of enemies. After we went in, we could see that the other door had a wooden bar blocking it.

Shadow removed one of the doors from its hinges, to BE SURE...

Flying Frogs!!!!  OMG dewds!  Semi transparent and biting... frogs bite?

The frogs were clearly a spell, hovering around a barricade the bad folks had built to delay our approach. They went through the walls, so likely some conjuration or some such magical doodah.

Someone said, "They are spirit guardians, like what Paraselene summons, except froggy".

Beneddar tried a shatter spell to disrupt the barrier, or the casters. Some of the frogs vanished, so likely at least one spell was interrupted.

A flash of light from one barricade... Beneddar was hit.

Shadow Walker threw a flask at oil at the barricade and Arkhelm set it on fire with a spell.

Another shatter from Beneddar and suddenly no more frogs in at the north barricade.

Aefir led us down, carefully.  The shatter had damaged the burning barricade enough to allow us to go, Shadow went down and saw no more opposition, but more stuff in the way.

The next obstacle was LARGE stone blocks, melted to block our progress. There are some tough priests down here...

We walked down a corridor we had not traveled before, with new doors to open and see.

The first new room had a table with some indentations from a drawing (map?), left in the grain of the wood. Tough to see, but Reebo spotted it. Maybe a large room with a tunnel on one side, and a channel or wall in middleish part.

The map showed five side rooms, all just rooms but with maybe pools or caverns in them.

This room was, we thought, a library. No secret doors or panels that we could find. Arkhelm did a detect magic on the books in the area.

The next room appeared to be priest's quarters. Beneddar found a small bag in a chest, something wrapped in burlap was in it. Unrolling the burlap revealed a large ruby.

But the next room had a LOT of dead (and dying?) beings of several breeds. It was a stomach wrenching, mind blasting sight. We close that door.

The next room we had been in before. We had met the Drow thief here. It was still messed up, and Natalie recalls wondering if we passed on a ring or robe of planar shift, but she would have needed it to get the prisoners out, so OK.

Now in familiar territory, we saw the room with all the various body parts from lots of different creature types, probably the person known as the Collector, or at least his storage area.

High priest of Frigga room was at end of hall, just like it was before. It didn't look like anyone had been in there since the last time we were in the room.

We went back to the other side of the underground, set fire to the other barricade, and call upstairs for the makings of a battering ram.

With a super well placed fire bolt, Reebo hit a critical portion of the barricade and it fell into shards, tossing small burning segments all over the place. It also shocked the heck out of the two priests who were on the other side.

One of the priests hit Reebo with some magic attack.

The other cast Spiritual Hammer, but it could not reach us.

We could hear a grinding sound coming up the stairs from the south, along with the magic attacks from the priests.

Another well placed firebolt and down went another priest. One down, one to go... at least here...

Two really well armored insectish creatures came from a corridor down the stairs, flames in their mouths.  Probably the things that melted the rocks on the other side.  Shadow approached and shot at them. They had good armor...

A spirited fight, we lost Sergeant Solal of the guard troops, but eventually the stone things were down at the foot of the stairs.
