Session 29: Mugged on Ox-Cart Road
The Adventurers continue their explorations of the City State of the Invincible Overlord and get mugged by an Efreeti.
Written by our scribe Carl with a few additions from myself. It is based on our Sunday, April 2, 2023 session.
Continued from: The City State of the Invincible Overlord.
Location: In the City State of the Invincible Overlord.
We spent the night in the Mermaid Tavern, where we had a mostly restful night and were set to wander about some more.
It was one thing after another. Reebo got accused of being an escaped slave. Shadow intervened with his usual charm and they went away with apologies and some token money for their trouble.
A shop labeled with Ghost Chaser caught our eye for a while. Brengwan says he has an exorcism that permanently banishes ghosts. He explained it to Aefir, some clerical mumbo jumbo that is probably nonsense but maybe not.
We were a big enough group that noone bothered us as we wandered about. It was kinda a shame, those XPs don't just fall out of the sky.
Mosquitoes !!! Lots and lots of them... Bah!
Seven guards asked if we were lost but were happy we were just deliberately wandering about and checking out the bars in the town. They were happy to advise us about our quest.
Someone said they saw a statue walking out of an alehouse this morning.
We wandered on the skirts of a not-so-good area, and left pretty quickly, rather than risk getting into any fight we could avoid. XP be damned!!!
Things were going well, and then a few of us started arguing with each other. Something in the air, perhaps. Seems this had happened yesterday in the same area, but who remembers that kind of crap...
Things started getting a little out of hand, and Shadow kept looking around for the cause (good thinking...) There were some other people arguing a little bit away from us, but they were not important.
Natalie lost it a little bit, and got cuffed for her troubles. Also smacked soundly.
Arkelm didn't fare any better on temper control, and kicked Natalie as she lay there. Aefir grabbed Arkelm and tried to snap him out of his anger. Didn't work, so Shadow tied Arkelm up as he protested about it, and then Arkelm snapped out as the knots were tied.
Carried out of the area, Natalie finally came out of the effect, and we all discussed the recurrence of this issue. Sooner out of here, the better.
We came up to a temple reminding us of the big copper ball we encountered in Tegel. We kept moving along.
Wandering further about, kinda looking for the barbarian shop where Reebo was getting his doggie armor made, we encountered an Efreeti. WOWZA !!!
It jumped off a three story building and tried to grab Shadow's bag of holding. Being much stronger, the Efreeti ripped the bag of holding out of Shadow's hold as we all attacked him.
Knocked down by a laughter spell and then grappled by Aefir, we tied it up and got Shadow's bag back. Manacles were to follow shortly thereafter, or would have if they had fit. Rope had to do, doubled up cause it was so freeking big!
Subdued, we searched and cleaned it out of goodies.
********** 500 GP, 80 PP, and a scimitar darned near too big to lift ***************
We yelled for some folks to call the guard, and doubled the tiedowns on it.
The Efreeti came out of the laughing effect and was not pleased with his situation. Tied and gagged, it could not use a lot of spells available. Good thing for us, no doubt. It still had some innate abilities, and used them, shooting flames out of it's hands.
We had hoped to not have to keep fighting, but oh well.... let the damage rain down before it could burn through it's ropes.
Between the ropes, being on the ground, and persistence of attack, we put it down in only a few rounds of combat. WHEW! It disappeared in flash of fire and a puff of smoke.
Back to the inn to rest up and recover...
